Not really a defense of the CISSP, but...

It is pretty funny hearing the detractors of CISSP and other "management" certifications (you know, the folks who consider themselves the "real" and "technical" security pros) as they discover amazing concepts such as:

  • Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning
  • Risk Analysis
  • Security Metrics
  • Aligning security with business practices and principals
  • Physical Security (beyond lockpicking at cons)
  • The importance and value of Policies and Procedures
  • The minefield of Corporate Ethics
  • and the rest of the CBK

Imagine that, maybe a wide ranging course of security topics can expose you to things outside of you area of expertise and make you a more well-rounded professional.

The Reluctant CISSP

Jack Daniel, Reluctant CISSP.  What the heck does "Reluctant CISSP" mean?

It means several things, sometimes it means I am reluctant to admit I am a CISSP because:

  • some people don't understand the CISSP certification
  • the attitudes and/or behavior of a few CISSPs give us a bad reputation
  • CISSPs tend to be managers, and mangers tend to be... managers
  • in some circumstances it sounds like bragging
  • sometimes the ISC2 seems to be headed in a different direction than I would like

It does not mean I do not value the certification, nor does it mean I do not respect others who hold the CISSP credential.  It also doesn't mean I have given up on ISC2, even if I would like to see some things change fairly significantly in the organization.

I have commented on the CISSP before and my opinion hasn't changed, just my tagline.

ISC2 Board of Directors Election

This one is just for CISSPs-

The election for the ISC² Board of Directors is open through Friday, November 30. Although there are over 48,000 CISSPs globally, it is expected that only about 2500 of us will vote. Given the amount of grumbling heard about ISC², I find that appalling.

So, if you are eligible to vote in the election- please vote.

Information on the candidates and voting procedures are on the ISC² website at http://isc2.org

If you are interested in driving change at ISC², I encourage you to check out the positions of Rolf Moulton and Bill Murray at their website- and then vote for the candidates who best represent your views.

Thanks
Jack
